Technical Overview: The COMPASS Framework for Autism Intervention

The Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success (COMPASS) is a research-validated consultation framework developed by Dr. Lisa Ruble. It is designed to optimize the efficacy of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for autistic students by synchronizing the efforts of parents, teachers, and consultants.

1. The Core Philosophy: "The Common Goal"

The central challenge COMPASS addresses is the "fragmentation of care." Often, a child behaves or learns differently at home than at school. COMPASS creates a unified "Action Plan" so the child receives consistent reinforcement in both environments.

2. The Implementation Workflow

The model follows a structured cycle to ensure no detail is lost:

  • Initial Consultation: A 3-hour intensive session involving the teacher, parent, and a consultant.

  • Goal Identification: Selection of 3–4 specific goals derived from the child’s IEP.

  • Environmental Support: Identifying specific changes to the child's physical or social environment (e.g., visual schedules, sensory breaks) that will be implemented at both school and home.

  • Teacher/Caregiver Coaching: This is a hallmark of the model. Consultants don't just provide advice; they provide direct coaching to ensure the strategies are being used with high fidelity.
